Dear Green Drinks Friends,
Last month, Matt Howard, Environmental Sustainability Director with the City of Milwaukee’s Office of Environmental Sustainability, presented to Green Drinks at Brocach Irish Pub. Matt discussed Milwaukee’s green projects, green team and sustainability plan, ME2 and ME3 programs, Milwaukee Shines Solar Program, electric vehicle charging stations, better buildings challenge, and more. While I was unable to personally attend the event, I received feedback from many sources remarking that Matt did a terrific job and the event was a success. Thank you Matt Howard!
Mark your calendars for October 10th! Green Drinks will have special guest Martha Davis Kipcak, Food Program Manager with Milwaukee’s Center for Resilient Cities and the Milwaukee Food Council. The Milwaukee Food Council brings together citizens, professionals, and government to address issues regarding access to healthy, affordable food, land use planning, local food production and procurement, public health and other policy initiatives in our regional food system. A strong community-based food system connects people to the source of their food, creates a thriving food economy, supports appreciation among cultures, enhances health, and provides food security for all members of the community. The Council is committed to building a healthy food system that is ecologically sustainable, economically vibrant, and socially just.
Martha comes to food activism by the way of the kitchen, having owned and operated her own catering firm dedicated to local, seasonal ingredients, while also raising three children and one smart cat. She founded The Kitchen Table Project in 2006, a unique initiative of Milwaukee philanthropist Lynde Uihlein, to help build capacity in key organizations promoting a socially just, sustainable food system which connects food to issues of environmental stewardship, equity, policy, economic vibrancy and healthy communities. Martha founded the Milwaukee Food Council in 2007 to gather diverse stakeholders to the table, strengthen the network, and build capacity in the local food system. All of her work moved to the Center for Resilient Cities in 2010. She works as a Community Food System Activist for Resilient Cities in Milwaukee, promoting a healthy, just, equitable and sustainable food system in the context of resilience. Through this work Martha serves (or has served) in leadership positions for Growing Power, Sweet Water Foundation, Milwaukee Food Council, Milwaukee County Winter Farmers Market, Milwaukee 7’s Food & Beverage Advisory Council, and the Wisconsin Local Food Network. Martha is also the Regional Governor for Slow Food Upper Midwest (MN, WI, MI), and former chapter leader of Slow Food WI Southeast. Martha continues to cook every chance she gets, mother three children and learn daily from her one smart cat.
